Seattle, WA (December 21, 2011) – Looking for a creative way to celebrate the New Year? The Children’s Museum, Seattle has a solution for you and it will delight the young and young at heart. On December 31st, guests at the Museum can count down to the New Year every hour as 2012 arrives around the globe.

The countdowns start in with a countdown for India (11am) and end with a celebration of traditions in Brazil (5pm). After each countdown, the Museum provides noisemakers and small cups of fruit juice to toast the new year, families can create a unique craft connected to the traditions of that region. Seattle, WA (August 15,2011) – Helping your kids prepare for a visit to the dentist is getting a little easier. On August 22nd, The Children’s Museum, Seattle is celebrating Teeth Day with some help from their friends at the UW Center for Pediatric Dentistry and Seattle Kids Dentistry.

From 10am – 2pm, Dr. Purva Merchant and her team from Seattle Kids Dentistry will be at the Museum providing health teeth screenings and helping ease kids fears about a visit to the Dentist. The day also includes Tooth-tackular Storytimes and art projects using toothbrushes and dental floss. A visit from the Tooth Fairy is expected as well. The UW Center for Pediatric Dentistry, supplying toothbrushes, toothpaste to give to families during this event, works hard to raise awareness of the importance of early oral health. July 27, 2011 - Seattle, WA – Bumbershoot: Seattle’s Music & Arts Festival, presents a unique opportunity for families to bond over live music, art and roasted corn. Seattle Center Monorail and Children’s Museum Partnership

Seattle, WA (April 14, 2011) – On Earth Day, Friday April 22nd, families have an opportunity to learn about conservation and a local energy-saving icon. The Children’s Museum, Seattle and the Seattle Center Monorail are hosting earth friendly activities for children ages 10-years and younger and their families.
Visitors to the Museum can join Earth Day story times and then tour the underside of the Monorail to see firsthand how it works. The Monorail is the fastest full-sized monorail system in the country and travels its one mile track at up to 50 miles per hour. Moving up to 200 passengers on each trip, the Monorail runs on just $1 of electricity for each trip.
As an added bonus for families visiting the Museum, after their tour, children can enjoy a complimentary round trip on the Monorail (adults cost $4). Space is limited for each story time and tour so families are encouraged to RSVP at www.thechildrensmuseum.org/earth-day.

Sound and light sensitivities are especially challenging for children with autism and often restrict the locations children can visit and play. “Thank you for sponsoring the Light It Up Blue event and offering new sensory friendly hours,” one mom wrote to the Museum. “We can’t wait to take part . . . we love you even more for including our son who has autism.”

The Museum launched a partnership with Autism Speaks in 2010 that has led to the new Early Opens for Autism. “The Museum values children and their families. This partnership with Autism Speaks is another way we can come along side families,” said Donna Marie Bertrand, Executive Director at the Museum. “The Museum desires to be a welcoming place for children with autism - Autism Speaks is helping us achieve that goal.”

Joining the Museum for the celebration were Charles Paxton, Loryn Paxton and Revelle Dunlop, original founders of the Museum. In addition to helping hand a life time membership certificate and prizes to the 5 Millionth visitor, Charles Paxton reviewed the Museum’s original business plan with the current Executive Director, Donna Marie Bertrand. The original business strategy laid the plans for a Museum that is nearly the same size as the Museum is today. “What incredible future thinkers! Seattle, WA (February 5, 2010) – The Children’s Museum, Seattle has partnered with the F5 St. Patrick’s Day Dash to bring additional family fun to this annual event. Encouraging families to find ways to get healthy, the Museum will be hosting 2 practice runs to help kids prepare to participate in the Leprechaun Lap on March 13th.

The practice runs give children ages 3 to 10 years old the opportunity to run around International Fountain, earning prizes and building stamina along the way. The Leprechaun Lap is run shortly before the annual St. Patrick’s Day Dash and allows kids to run (or ride in a stroller) along a shortened race route. Seattle, WA (November 29, 2010) – The Children’s Museum, Seattle is hosting a Scholastic Book Fair on December 11th through the 16th to benefit Page Ahead Children’s Literacy Program. Building on their exhibit, Adventures with Clifford The Big Red Dog, the Museum is encouraging families to consider books as Christmas gifts to promote reading in their household. As an added bonus, for every book purchased during the fair, Scholastic will donate a book to Page Ahead which promotes literacy and gives new books to at-risk children.
Adventures with Clifford The Big Red Dog teaches children about Clifford’s Big Ideas which include Share, Help Others and Work Together. The goal of the Big Ideas is to support children’s growing understanding that the actions they choose make a difference to themselves and others. This traveling exhibit will be at the Museum through January 17, 2011.

November, 26, 2010-- The Children’s Museum, Seattle, a hands-on museum for children and their families, announced the election of Gerald Jensen and David Geyer to the Board of Trustees.

Gerald Jensen serves as president and CEO of Siskin Children’s Institute, a non-profit organization based in Chattanooga, TN. The Institute serves children with and without disabilities, their families and the professionals who work with them through four areas of focus: education, outreach, healthcare and research. “As a board member who lives outside the Museum’s geographical region, I am excited about bringing a different perspective to the table.” said Jensen. “ I look forward to contributing my expertise to the Museum, but I’m also energized about what I will learn from working with the Museum’s board, staff and patrons.”

David Geyer is a Producer and Account Manager for The Production Network in Seattle, WA. Geyer joins the board as a member at large. “I have been wanting to become involved with a community group for some time and was thrilled when I learned about the member at large position at the Museum. Since our fist son was born, we’ve been so grateful to have the Museum here in Seattle as a place to play and learn, especially on rainy days! Pursuing the opportunity to combine my desire for outreach with a valued resource was too perfect, “ stated Geyer.

Seattle, WA (October 12, 2010) – The Children’s Museum, Seattle hosted their annual Corporate Breakfast on Tuesday, October 12 and welcomed over 200 guests to the Skyline Level of the Space Needle, raising over $107,000.
Executive Director Donna Marie Bertrand shared the importance of the Museum’s mission and how the 40 Developmental Assets®, as detailed by the Search Institute, can impact the life of a child. Citing this research, she reminded all in attendance the lifelong impact a community can have on a child. “Surveys indicate when a child has support from as few as 3 adults who understand this building framework, 1 within family, 1 within school and 1 from the community, they are less likely to be depressed or have health issues. They are more likely to succeed in school, know their purpose, provide service to their community and resolve conflict without violence.”
Touched by the mission of the Museum, Seattle Sounders FC Coach Sigi Schmid and Sports Announcer Tony Ventrella returned to the event again this year. Coach Schmid relayed how important the combination of work and play is for his team. Giving insight into his coaching techniques, he relayed how it’s the “playful” times during practice that have had the larger impact on player’s performances.

Seattle, WA (October 8, 2010) – The Children’s Museum, Seattle is excited to announce a partnership with the WA Dental Service Foundation to bring families Bright Smiles Week at the Museum October 11 – 17, 2010. Children and their families can participate in daily activities including Tooth-tacular Storytimes, Fantastic Flossing Art projects and more. Program will also be provided Public Health of Seattle King County to teach children and parents about the importance of oral hygiene and cavity prevention.

On Wednesday, October 13th children can bring their teddy bears to the Museum for a “dental check-up”. Volunteers will help dispel myths about dentist visits as they check the teeth of children’s lovable friends and familiarize children with what happens at a dental visit. Wednesday is also National Take Your Teddy Bear to Work day so The Children’s Museum, Seattle is adding an extra bonus. Adventures with Clifford The Big Red Dog is inspired by the top-rated TV series Clifford The Big Red Dog™ on PBS KIDS®.
