Can I bring food to my party?

Food is allowed in the birthday rooms (not in the exhibits) and a small refrigerator is located in each of the themed party rooms. There is a larger refrigerator and/or freezer if necessary, though not located in your room. The following beverages are not allowed in the party rooms: hot beverages in disposable paper cups (they must be in spill-proof travel mugs), or alcoholic beverages of any kind. Glassware, hot plates, chafing dishes, or any other kinds of heating elements are not allowed in the Museum.

You may bring in your food or have it delivered from wherever you’d like (even from home), keeping in mind the policies above.

How should I plan my party day?

You have 2 hours in your party room, but your guests have admission for the whole day – so you can let them know to come anytime. For most parties, giving your guests the start time of the party room is best; for others (such as 3pm weekend parties) it might be best to let your guests know to come and play before snacks and singing ‘Happy Birthday’. How you choose to run your party is largely up to you – we just want to make sure everyone has time to play!

Part of what makes a birthday party at SCM special is that you and your guests can arrive at any point during the day of the birthday party and stay until we close, all for the price of the birthday package. The Museum is open 10am-5pm Tuesday-Sunday.

Party hosts are usually able to access their room for set-up 10-15 minutes before their scheduled start time, depending on turnover, but we can’t guarantee it.

How many people can I invite to my party?

Each party room has a set maximum capacity that is listed on booking. This capacity includes all adults and children, and the host family. For safety reasons, it is important that no party exceed the maximum capacity.

Do the birthday party packages include any staff facilitation?

We have a birthday greeter who will greet and direct your guests to the party room, alongside support from our Rentals and Sales team who will check in on you periodically. (And don’t forget – we’ll take care of the clean up!)

Can I bring decorations?

You are welcome to decorate with Mylar balloons, tablecloths, happy birthday banners and streamers (using the painter’s tape that we provide in the rooms). However, we do not allow latex or plastic balloons, confetti, masks, or live animals.

Piñatas are allowed with advance approval from the Rentals and Sales Supervisor. Please let them know if you are interested in bringing a piñata.

The rooms themselves are festively decorated with a colorful mural on the walls and brightly colored chairs and tables.

Will I be able to decorate the room before my party begins (Not Applicable to After Hours Parties)?

Set up and pack up are included in the 2 hour rental. You will have access to the room at the time that your birthday party is scheduled to begin. It is the Museum’s goal to get each party host into the party room 10-15 minutes early; we just can’t guarantee that with the party and cleaning schedule for the day.

Can I drive up to the Museum to unload party supplies or drop of guests?

Unfortunately, the Seattle Center Campus is closed to vehicles. We suggest unloading at the corner of 2nd and Thomas, near the Seattle Children’s Theatre, or at 5th and Harrison near the MoPOP turnaround. We also have carts available to assist with transport. You are welcome to collect one at check-in. We also suggest using rolling suitcases to transport your party supplies.

What directions should I give my guests?

The best directions you can give your guests is to tell them to drive toward the Space Needle! We are located on the Seattle Center campus and the signage from the freeway points people to Seattle Center and the Space Needle.  From there, parking around Seattle Center campus is easiest if you point people to one of the Seattle Center Parking Garages. For more specific driving directions, click here.

After parking, follow the signs for the Armory or Seattle Children’s Museum. We are on the ground level of the Armory. Click here for printable “Helpful Tips for Birthday Party Guests”.

Where will my guests enter the Museum?

For a party during museum open hours, you and your will be checking in at the birthday greeter’s desk. It will be placed inside the museum to the right of the doors. All your guests need to do is mention the birthday kid’s name, and they will be checked-in, receive wristbands, and be led to your party room.

If your guests arrive before the party starts, we will get them inside to start playing until it is party time. Please be aware that in accordance with our general safety policy, if an adult without a child arrives before the host has checked in, we will not let them into the Museum early.

For After Hours parties, direct your guests to check in at the front desk inside of the Museum doors. To allow for proper cleaning and preparation, the doors will reopen promptly at the party start time, and not before.

Can I tell my adult guests that it is an option for them to drop their kids off and leave them at the Museum for the duration of the party?

Unfortunately, no. Due to safety concerns, SCM has a strict ‘no children allowed without adults’ policy. Children entering the Museum must have an adult caregiver with them (18 years or older). For specific questions, please contact your Booking Coordinator.
